About Sensing Technologies

Passive Infrared (PIR)
Infrared occupancy sensors are passive devices designed to detect the movement of heat-emitting bodies. They are installed to monitor areas where there are no physical obstructions to block the sensor's field of view.

HOW IT WORKS: People naturally emit a small amount of infrared heat. As a person passes through the field of view, the sensor detects the motion as a change in the infrared background and responds by switching on area lights. After the field of view is unoccupied for a user-defined delayed-off time, the sensor will automatically turn off the lights.

Ultrasonic (US)
Ultrasonic sensing technology provides highly accurate small-motion detection. Leviton sensors employing ultrasonic technology are well suited to monitoring areas, especially smaller or narrow ones, with inanimate objects (such as furniture) that block the line of site and hence are likely to block the field of view of PIR sensors. They are also ideal where more sensitive detection is required.

HOW IT WORKS: Ultrasonic occupancy sensors generate high frequency sound waves beyond the capability of human hearing, due to the Doppler Effect. These controls are active: continually emitting sound waves and monitoring changes in the return time of the reflected sound waves. Movement in the sound wave field causes a change in wave frequency and the sensor responds by switching on area lights. When the change in frequency is no longer detected after a delayed-off time, the sensor turns off the lights. Leviton ultrasonic sensors operate at a frequency outside the range of most hearing aid products and will not interfere with their ability to operate properly.

Multi-Technology
Multi-Technology occupancy sensors ultrasonic sensing for maximum sensitivity with PIR technology to prevent false triggers from air conditioning and corridor activity. These sensors are ideal for large, open areas including office areas with cubicles, general workspaces, warehouse and storage facilities, cafeterias, and public areas in commercial facilities.

HOW IT WORKS: Leviton multi-technology sensors utilize both sensor technologies to determine when to turn the lights off.

Adaptive Definition
A dedicated internal microprocessor continually analyzes the room environment and adjusts itself automatically. The internal timer, detection sensitivity and thresholds are automatically adjusted. Once installed, a sensor incorporating adaptive technology should never require manual adjustment or calibration.

Selection & Placement

Sensors can be mounted in the middle of walls, in corners, or on ceilings. Occupancy sensors must be intelligently placed in order to ensure that motion is detected throughout an entire space. With a variety of models from which to choose, care should be taken to select the proper combination of sensors to cover an entire area with motion detection.

Factors to consider before selecting and placing an occupancy sensor include:

Size and shape of area needing coverage compared to ranges of occupancy sensors
Obstacles that may block the sensor's line of sight
How much activity there is in a space
Ceiling height
Airflow that can falsely register as motion
Location of HVAC ducts

Q: What is the RoHS Directive?
A: The RoHS Directive is properly known as the Directive of the European Parliament on “The Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment ". It establishes limits for the content of six types of hazardous material in electrical and electronic equipment placed on the market in Europe after July 1, 2006.

Q: What are the six substances?A: The substances are lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers. This includes both metals and compounds of lead, cadmium and mercury. The RoHS Directive sets maximum concentration levels allowable of these substances in the "homogenous materials" of electrical and electronic equipment covered by the legislation. The maximum concentration levels in homogenous materials for lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls , and Polybrominated diphenyl ethers is 0.1 percent by weight, and 0.01 percent by weight for cadmium.

Q: What does "homogenous material" mean?A: Homogenous material is defined as material that cannot be “mechanically disjointed” into different materials (materials cannot be separated into other materials by mechanical means such as cutting, crushing, grinding or abrasive processes). Materials such as plastics, metals, coatings, etc. should not contain the restricted substances.

Q: Is it true that an electronic assembly with less than 0.1% lead by weight would be non-compliant if any components on it have solder plating that contains more than 0.1% by weight itself?A: Yes, because the concentration limits apply to homogeneous materials and the solder plating is one material.

Q: What does the RoHS Directive require affected companies to do?A: RoHS requires companies who place electronic or electrical goods on the European market after July 1, 2006 to ensure that they do not contain levels of the six specified hazardous substances above the permitted levels.

A good start is to take inventory of the outlets both inside and outside your home. Remember that electricity and water don’t mix! Don’t know if your house is equipped with GFCI outlets? They’re easy to spot. They have two buttons on the face – one to test the outlet and the other to reset the protection following an interruption of power caused by a ground fault. A GFCI helps protect people by interrupting the flow of electricity when it detects a problem such as a ground fault. “GFCI protected outlets are essential in areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, basements, laundry areas, garages and outdoors,” said Bill Grande, a Leviton Manufacturing Company product expert. “In fact, the National Electric Code requires GFCIs in these areas for all new construction.”
In terms of maintenance, GFCIs should be tested monthly to ensure they are in working condition. Testing your GFCI takes less than a minute when following these simple steps:

Plug a lamp into the GFCI and turn it on. The light should now be on.
Push the “TEST” button of the GFCI. The GFCI should “trip” and the light should go off.
Push the “RESET” button. The light should come back on.

If the device either did not trip or reset as described the GFCI should be replaced.
While checking the outdoor outlets, it is also a good idea to inspect any weather-resistant covers. The elements – particularly cold and snow – can potentially damage covers. Covers which appear cracked, have damaged hinges or are otherwise compromised should be replaced in order to provide maximum protection.

Keep an Eye on These Other Electrical Safety Hazards
Electrical outlet safety is just one facet of overall home electrical safety. Homeowners should also be alert to other hazards such as overloaded outlets, frayed wires and dimming or flickering lights. According to the National Fire Protection Association, an average of 53,000 electrical home structure fires occur each year, claiming more than 450 lives, injuring more than 1,400 people, and causing more than $1.4 billion in property damage (National Fire Protection Association, 2002-2006). Short-Time Grounding Test Currents
Ground-path integrity is of critical importance to safe operation of industrial equipment. Leviton pin and sleeve devices are tested by applying a test current through their ground path that far exceeds the device rating. All devices are properly wired and connected to line current at rated values. Then the ground path is subjected to a dramatic, sudden increase in current for 4 seconds. In all cases, the ground pin, sleeve, and terminals of the devices must sustain the test current, continue to function properly, and show no evidence of damage or deterioration in any electrical or mechanical elements of the ground path. Test current values and test parameters are displayed in the above chart.

Cord Secureness Test Values
Heavy cord stress is typical of industrial applications. To assure you of top performance, Leviton pin and sleeve devices are subjected to a punishing series of tests to confirm that they can absorb heavy cord pulls. The cord conductors wired to devices are simultaneously twisted and pulled. Values for the applied twisting torque and force of pull are shown above. In all cases, the cord displacement is less than 3/32 inches.

Minimum Withdrawl Force
In industrial settings, inadvertent disconnection of power can be troublesome at best, dangerous at worst, and unacceptable in any case. To verify that Leviton pin and sleeve plugs and connectors remain securely connected, they are tested to establish the minimum force required for withdrawl. In establishing these minimum withdrawl forces, the plugs and connectors are properly mated, but not locked with locking rings or other mechanical means. The pins and sleeves provide the only resistance to the force of withdrawl. In all cases, the values in the table above show the minimum force required to separate the plugs and connectors.

Designed to mate with other manufacturers’ high-amperage single pole connectors and receptacles, Rhino-Hide single pole devices can be installed on both existing silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCR’s) and generator stations or on new oil and gas rig construction.
Connectors

Rhino-Hide connectors include a male or female contact with a Santoprene thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) housing and dust cap. Choose male contacts for the power side of the circuit or female contacts for the motor load side of the circuit. To prevent unauthorized separation of the connectors, select a color-coded in-line coupler from Rhino-Hide accessories.

Receptacles
Rhino-Hide receptacles include a bus bar with male or female contact inserted into a Santoprene TPV insulator which is protected by a powder coated metal housing and TPV dust cap. A clevis pin (included) and padlock shackle secure the bus bar.

Bus bars are available with single or double holes and each is compatible with the full cable range, 313 MCM to 777 MCM. Choose a male bus bar for the power side of the circuit or a female bus bar for the motor load side of the circuit.

What is a GFCI?
A GFCI is a receptacle or outlet designed to protect people from hazardous ground faults. A ground fault occurs when electrical current travels through any abnormal path to ground, which can be dangerous if the current travels through a person. Electrical current "leaking" from the faulty appliance can travel through anyone touching it, especially in a wet environment, causing a serious electrical shock.

How does a GFCI work?
The GFCI monitors the flow of electricity from the outlet to any electrical device plugged into it. If the GFCI detects that some current is not returning to the receptacle, and is going out through another path, the GFCI will quickly turn off power to the receptacle.

Where should GFCIs be installed?
Anywhere a receptacle is required and a water source is present, such as kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, workshops and garages, as well as near pools, spas, hot tubs and similar outdoor installations.

Why are GFCIs required in residences?
Since the mid-1970’s, the National Electrical Code has required that all new homes have GFCIs installed in various locations where hazardous ground faults are most likely to occur. Beginning January 1, 2003, all UL-Listed GFCIs must meet tougher new listing requirements for mis-wiring, surge immunity, and resistance to corrosion and noise.

Saves on energy code compliance costs
The need to optimize building energy performance has resulted in a variety of mandatory energy codes. Occupancy sensors provide a very cost-effective means of compliance with these codes. They also offer an easy way to achieve higher levels of voluntary certification for implementation of energy saving measures, resulting in potential income tax credits for building owners or tenants who meet these "green" standards including the new Energy Policy Act of 2006 (EPACT).

ASHRAE 90.1-1999/2001 Energy Standard
In 2004, the U.S. Department of Energy mandated that state energy codes must meet or exceed their ASHRAE 90.1-1999 Energy Standard. In addition to other requirements, this standard calls for occupancy sensors that turn lights off within 30 minutes after a space is vacated as one solution for required automatic shut-off lights in commercial buildings greater than 5000 square feet. In addition, occupancy sensors are required in certain classrooms, conference/meeting rooms and employee lunch and break rooms if no multi-scene control is in place.

IECC 2003/2005 Lighting Control ProvisionsProvisions of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) have been adopted by many levels of government around the United States in formulating their requirements for minimum energy efficiency in commercial building design. The lighting load reduction controls (Section 805.2.2.1) section of this code allows occupancy sensors to be used in open areas as an alternative to a provision requiring manual control that uniformly reduces lighting by at least 50%. Lighting in private offices is also exempt from this IECC provision because each office contains only one luminary and is controlled by an occupancy sensor.

California Energy Commission (CEC) Title 24 Program
The California Energy Commission (CEC) took the lead in exceeding the ASHRAE 90.1-1999 Energy Standard with its Title 24 program. It applies to non-residential and high-rise residential buildings as well as hotel/motel occupancies. Key provisions now in effect include:
Area Controls: An occupancy sensor that turns lights off within 30 minutes after the space is vacated for all areas enclosed by ceiling height partitions.
Controls to Reduce Lighting: General lighting for any enclosed space 100 sq. ft. or larger where connected lighting load exceeds 0.8 watts per sq. ft. for the space and has more than one light source shall be controlled so the load for the lights may be reduced by at least one half. (Occupancy sensors that switch alternate rows of lighting fixtures based on occupancy are a possible solution).
Shut-off Controls: For every floor, all interior lighting must have a separate automatic control - an occupancy sensor or some other device - capable of automatically shutting off the lighting.
New Single and Low-Rise Residential Structures: Bathroom, garage, laundry room, utility room and outdoor lighting in single residences as well as lighting in common areas of low-rise residencies with four or more dwelling units must be from high-efficacy luminaries. If luminaries are used in these locations that are not high efficacy, occupancy sensors must control them. Lighting in other areas of residential buildings that is not from high efficacy luminaries is only permitted if controlled by either a dimmer switch or an occupancy sensor.

LEED Voluntary Certification ProgramA voluntary program developed and administered by the U.S. Green Buildings Council (USGBC), LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a four-tier rating and certification system designed to encourage sustainable building practices. In addition to their importance for energy code compliance, occupancy sensors can also help a project qualify for LEED tier certifications. Besides to its focus on daylight harvesting in particular to reduce a building's operating costs, the LEEDS program also encourages the use of occupancy sensors in intermittently occupied spaces for better control of lights and HVAC systems to boost overall energy savings.
